About the Master of Liberal Arts (MLA)
The IIT Guwahati Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) is a two-year programme designed to encourage students to continuously create, grow, and learn with the help of faculty experts engaged in cutting edge teaching and research in the humanities and social sciences. Our curriculum reflects this commitment, as well as the diverse backgrounds and disciplines of our instructors and participants alike.
Critical thinking is the cornerstone of this programme, and students will train themselves to think independently and openly about issues that affect their lives. 
Liberal arts programmes have mostly been the prerogative of elite undergraduate education internationally. While this course does take inspiration from international models, we do not aim to replicate them.
The programme pays attention to the diversities and multiplicities of the past and present in India and the world.
Students choosing our programme would have already acquired three years of discipline-specific education in their chosen undergraduate curricula. The MLA will offer training in general liberal arts education and advanced abstract thinking about disciplines and knowledge production, thus enabling graduates to make informed and innovative choices in their future careers.

An aptitude for critical thinking, general inquisitiveness, pleasure in reading, curiosity about the human environment and a strong passion for history and aesthetics is desirable.
